Annual Charrette June 16

The Center will hold its Annual Charrette on Wednesday, June 16, 2010, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  at the World Financial Center’s Winter Garden.

During the Charrette, 100 students in grades 4 to 8 from Salvadori programs in all five boroughs will team up with 30 to 40 volunteer architects and engineers to tackle an all-day challenge: designing a park and monument in honor of thoselost in Haiti's earthquake.

Children work in team mentored by the volunteers, many of whom hail from the city's leading firms. They brainstorm designs, build their models, and then present their work.

To see a challenge in action, watch the 4-minute video "How to Charrette."

Past Charrettes have included a re-design of Times Square as a kid- and pedestrian-friendly place, a green city, and a community made of treehouses.
