PD Survey
In an effort to improve our Professional Development programs, the Salvadori Center would like your feedback. Please take a few minutes to complete this confidential survey. Your response is important to us, even if you received PD/Salvadori programs several years ago.
Professional Development
If any one phrase captures the heart of the Salvadori enterprise, that phrase would be professional development.
If any one phrase captures the heart of the Salvadori enterprise, that phrase would be professional development. We have devised strategies, techniques, and lesson plans that teachers can apply to their teaching so that their students can learn geometry by designing bridges out of tongue depressors, social studies by plotting a course for the transcontinental railroad, or physics by building and testing simple machines.
The Workshops
Teachers and administrators interested in getting a "dose" of Salvadori can take one or more of our topical workshops.

Multi-Day Workshops
In our Turbo Institutes for regular and out-of-school time educators, participants engage the built environment of New York City through walking tours, visits to architectural and engineering firms and construction sites, and hands-on exploration of Salvadori lesson plans.
One Day Workshop
In full- or half-day workshops offered through the Practical Professional Development program, Salvadori Senior Educators teach participants how to use the built environment as a resource for creating specific content curricula: from using bridges to teach math to using monuments and memorials to explore social studies.
In the Practical PD program, the Salvadori Center offers either full-day or half-day workshops where Salvadori educators work closely with teachers, administrators, curriculum specialists, and other school personnel to explore topics ranging from the use of the built environment as a tool for learning, to specific content curricula, like the engineering of bridges or the science behind green design.
Practical PD workshops are appropriate for teachers, administrators, curriculum specialists, and other school personnel. These offerings can also be targeted to out-of-school-time educators from community centers, museums, and camps.
Summer Institute 2013 Schedule
DAY 1 Foundation: Why Do Structures Stand Up?
On this first day, participants will investigate the foundations of “Why Structures Stand Up” through hands-on activities.
Implementation
Participants, along with their grade level peers, will work on a challenge that they will later present to the other groups of educators.Agenda
- Intro and overview of Salvadori and its methodology
- Overview of Day 1 and Day 2 and expectations
- Salvadori foundation projects
- Groups’ Design and Development assignment
- Day 1 enrichment
Salvadori Summer Institute 2013
Bringing the City to your Classroom - Using Structures Around Us to Teach Core Subjects
In July 2013, the Salvadori Center is offering its annual three-day Summer Institute. The Institute is open to all educators (teachers, principals, coaches, museum educators, para-professionals to name a few)
Participants will unlock the math and science embedded in the built-environment through architectural & engineering concepts. They will experience first-hand how Project-Based-Learning can promote critical thinking and problem-solving in their students, as well as coherent instruction in their own teaching.
Tuesday through Thursday, July 9th – 11th
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
OBJECTIVES: Participants will be able to:
- Use the built environment to bring math and science to life
- Incorporate built environment themes to align with math and science standards
- Investigate applications of math and science to architecture and engineering

ASPDP survey analysis
Based on pre- and post-surveys administered in two ASPDP courses provided by the Salvadori Center in Fall 2012, participants in these courses clearly increase both their content knowledge and confidence in their ability to apply relevant pedagogical skills. You can download the complete report HERE.

SUMMARY OF THE INSTITUTE
In this intensive three day institute, participants will acquire a deep knowledge of the built environment and use it to extend their students’ application of math and science. The Institute will begin with participants investigating different components of architecture and engineering that are essential to the construction of structures. Concepts include: forces, geometry, ratio and proportion, and scientific inquiry. Participants will apply their knowledge from these investigations by designing their own hands-on, project-based activity.
One goal of Salvadori’s Summer Institute is to coach participants on how to use project-based instruction focused on the built environment to teach math and science. Therefore, the first two days of the Institute will uncover the math and science that is at the foundation of the construction of structures through working on challenges with peers in the same grade level group and presenting to the other grade level groups. The third day will explore the built environment through a grade specific neighborhood tour, bridge walk or skyscraper exploration, each of which culminates with a hands-on Common Core aligned activity.

COST:
- Package 1: All three days $450.00 per teacher
- Package 2: Day 1 and Day 2 $350.00 per teacher
- Package 3: Only Day 3 costs $200.00 per teacher
Please register by May 31, 2013 to guarantee a seat.
Note:Three (3) or more educators from the same school each get a 10% discount! Send a team of educators and they can create interdisciplinary lesson outlines based on a built environment theme that they can later implement in their classrooms.
TEACHER SCHOLARSHIPS:
A limited number of Summer Institute scholarships are awarded to teachers who are able to demonstrate a commitment to using the built environment to teach math and science and an interest in Project-Based Learning (PBL). One (1) full and two (2) partial scholarships will be awarded based on available funds and number of applicants. A scholarship form may be downloaded HERE. Deadline: Friday, May 31st (Scholarship winners who have already submitted payment will be reimbursed.)
