> Letters from Liberty Lake Elementary

Following the tragedy on September 11th, many people around the country, and around the world, felt a need to do something to help. Most gave money, and quite a few gave their time. Ms. Lemley's 3rd grade class in Liberty Lake, WA decided to extend their condolences to students near the site of the disaster. This week, Salvadori Program Officer Pat Shuford received a pile of letters from them written on flag-style notepaper. She will share them with her students at Anthony Corlears School on the Lower East Side. We wanted to share them with our web community. We send a heartfelt thanks to Ms. Lemley's class for their kind thoughts. Their letters are quoted below.

I'm sorry for what happened in your state…We had an assembly about what happened.

I am sorry. I feel sad.

I'm sorry that the Twin Towers fell down. Are you scared? I'm scared that they're going to come back. Do you think we should have a war?

I am so sorry this happened. It must have been so scary. It was even scary for us…If you write me back send your picture. P.S. Any time.

I am sorry that all that happened. I wish it didn't happen because now everyone is going to be sad. I hope you're alright. We sang a lot of American songs for your state. We even stayed inside for recess for your state. We didn't play. We read.

I am so sorry about what happened in New York City a few days ago. But things will get better. Today we had an assembly on what happened. We rang bells and sang songs. I'm sure you were very frightened. We also had candles that all of the teachers held. Then we came back and watched the ceremony and we said a prayer…

I am sorry about what happened to the Twin Towers and any of your family…
