Here you will find a compilation of news events, articles, essays, and other materials that feature the staff and principles of the Salvadori Center in action.

The materials are separated by year. Just click on the year to bring you to the listings for that year. Clicking on the red triangle will bring you back to the top of the page.

Some of these pieces feature a small event: the visit of an architecture club to an architecture firm, a class’s first trip outside of their own borough to go to a museum for the first time in their lives. Others detail our programs, such as the Annual Charrette or the Benefit, while other features article by and about the Salvadori Center.

Even a casual reading of a few of these pieces will give you a sense of the richness and excitement the Salvadori program brings to the students and teachers it touches.

2007

• The first-ever Salvadori Turbo Institute ran from July 10 to July 12, taking 15 teachers through three intensive days of professional development.
• Once again, the Center brings together students and volunteers for the 2007 version of its Annual Design Charrette", in the Great Hall at City College of New York
• Salvadori architect-educator Patricia Shuford brings her students at PS39 in Staten Island to the heights with her 8-week skyscraper project.
• The Center, along with Rafael Viñoly Associates and others, is working on a project to create a green roof on the Stevenson Campus in the Bronx.

2006

• Francis Osei at 131 heads up the Science Olympiad 2006 (December 2006)
• Salvadori Board Members participate in PENCIL's Principal for a Day.
• Salvadori Works with KeySpan Foundation and Renaissance Charter School to Raise an Active Solar-Powered Greenhouse (June 2006)

• “Mario Salvadori: Champion of Structure Design in Architecture,”Structure Magazine, November 2005 - A laudatory profile about Mario Salvadori by Richard Weingardt. Also read Dr. Lorraine Whitman’s Letter to the Editor (in PDF format) responding to the article.
• Anderson School Trip to The Skyscraper Museum (November 2005)
• Election Day Professional Development Workshop (November 2005) - Thirty teachers, consultants, and Salvadori staff spent an afternoon in the Skyscraper Museum creating scavenger hunts for different subject areas. (Link will open in a new window.)
• Coalition of Essential Schools Fall Forum ’05 (November 2005) - Executive Director Lorraine Whitman and Math Consultant Jonathan Katz showed two dozen teachers how to apply architecture and engineering principles to their subject areas by building chairs.
• The Renaissance Charter School's Architecture Club Visits HLW International (October 2005)
• EBAFF Trip to The Skyscraper Museum (October 2005) - Sixth-grade math students from the East Bronx Academy for the Future spent a pleasant educational day at the Skyscraper Museum. For some of them, this was the first time they had ever been out of their borough. (Link will open in a new window.)
• The Andrew Freedman Home Design Charrette (September 2005) - See what 90 sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders did to the Andrew Freedman Home in the Bronx.
• The 2005 Summer Institute (Summer 2005) - Thirty-six teachers work with Salvadori architect educators to learn the Salvadori curriculum, making everything from geodesic domes to concrete poetry.
