New
York Foundation for Architecture News: Salvadori Charrette
Salvadori
Center's annual Charrette brought together 80 students and 20 practicing
architects and engineers for an exciting daylong event on June 2 at the
Center for Architecture. This year's design challenge, themed "Streetscapes
and Memory." presented the middle and high school students with the
task of creating a memorial for a holiday or event using LaGuardia Park
across the street from the Center (anchored by a life-size bronze of Mayor
Fiorello LaGuardia). Architects and engineers from Battery Park City Authority,
Beyer Blinder Belle, Cerami & Associates, DeSimone, Kohn Pedersen
Fox, Lucius Pitkin, NYC Transit Authority, Port Authority of NY&NJ,
and Weidlinger Associates, among others, mentored the students in how
to convey their ideas as realistic 3-D models.
A
frenzy of sketching, discussing, cutting, building, and pizza eating (involving
students and mentors alike) ensued. Five hours later, well-conceived projects
dedicated to the war on terrorism, peace, summertime, youth, famous New
Yorkers, the 4th of July, and reflection, emerged from the chaos. And
who knows how many future urban planners and architects may emerge from
such an adventure? For more information about Salvadori Center and its
