Salvadori’s in-school and after-school residencies provide collaborative, hands-on, project-based learning opportunities for students of all abilities.

In School

"We immediately noted a tremendous difference in attitude towards mathematics. We began to see wonderful hands-on projects that involved the very skills in which our students were weakest. Perhaps the best symbol of success was brought to our attention by the 9th grade math teacher who asked why her new 9th grade students were so superior to the students who came to her in previous years."

– Monte Joffee, former Principal, The Renaissance Charter School, Queens

The Center’s experienced teaching staff of architects, educators and engineers share their passion for the urban landscape in ways that inspire both young learners and their teachers. Our “hands on, minds on” school programs deepen content learning, span disciplines and meet rigorous curriculum standards. They increase students’ academic performance and critical thinking skills, while providing teachers with effective strategies to engage all learners.

Learning through Engineering, Architecture and Design

LEAD (Learning Through Engineering, Architecture & Design), an exciting 8-week Salvadori school experience, is an excellent introduction to our work. Salvadori educators engage students and teachers in topics ranging from Bridges to Green Design to My Community, all designed to enhance your school’s curricula.  Through selected model-making projects, students explore the real-world applications of abstract academic concepts.

We invite public and private schools (K-12) in New York City to experience LEAD

Salvadori Center: LEAD (Learning through Engineering, Architecture and Design)

All Day Design Challenge

Each June, the Center sponsors a design challenge for 100 students from Salvadori schools. Participants work in small teams mentored by architects and engineers from New York’s leading firms. Young people brainstorm ideas, design and build their models, and present their work to their peers. We conceive a new challenge every year, from creating futuristic societies to designing an eco-village of tree houses.

Out of School

" I learned to teach content and standards through activities-based lessons, to enhance curriculum with materials and objects, and to give students the opportunity to learn by doing." Teacher from PS 52, Queens

The Salvadori Center offers a variety of programs outside traditional school hours. BRIDGES, our most popular after school program, delivers 12 weeks of hands-on, project-based learning. Each 90 minute session uses the built environment – bridges, skyscrapers, landmarks, skate parks, and more – to bring math and science lessons to life. Salvadori also provides a variety of family programs at cultural institutions throughout the City. Join our mailing list to receive news and updates.
