Salvadori Strengthens YMCA After-School Programs
Over the past year, Salvadori architect-educators have been teaching leaders and counselors from the YMCA of Greater New York how to apply the Center's hands-on, project-based approach to their afterschool activities, with a special focus on STEAM education: science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. YMCA is the largest provider of after-school programs in the city.
To date, the YMCA has incorporated the Salvadori model of the city as a living classroom into over 40 after-school programs throughout the five boroughs. According to Ellen Murphy, director of communications for the New York City YMCA, NYC's "Y kids" have achieved "spectacular things using the Salvadori model." The YMCA and the Salvadori Center plan to expand the program as a demonstration how educators and established community institutions can blend K-12 STEAM education into after-school programs.
