Salvadori in a Box: Our fun and interactive STEAM Education Kit

Salvadori in a Box includes eight hands-on STEAM lessons based on Salvadori’s Bridges and Skyscrapers curricula. Containing all materials and supplies with visual and written instructions, students will:
build, design, and test structures
use the Design & Engineering Methodology of Problem Solving
incorporate the Scientific Method as they perform experiments
work collaboratively with their peers
“This is a great way to learn. So much fun, and an amazing amount of projects in one box! ”

-
WHAT IT DOES
-
Activity 1: Tension & Compression
Salvadori students explore the forces of tension & compression by creating and testing columns to failure to see which material is the strongest.
-
Activity 2: Arch Bridge
Salvadori students construct an arch bridge and learn how forces travel through the bridge by testing its load-bearing capacity until it collapses!
-
Activity 3: Shape & Strength
Salvadori students test various bridge spans to learn how shape impacts strength.
-
Activity 4: Beam & Suspension
Salvadori students build and test a beam bridge and a suspension bridge to learn how design impact strength.
-
Activity 5: Sky High Challenge
Salvadori students construct the tallest skyscraper from limited materials, while following specific guidelines.
-
Activity 6: Columns
Salvadori students test columns to understand how the shape of each column impacts strength.
-
Activity 7: Beams
Salvadori students test beams to learn how the shape of each beam impacts strength.
-
Activity 8: Structural Grids & Facades
Salvadori students build their own model of a skyscraper by creating a structural grid and facade.
FAQs
What age group is the Box intended for?
Salvadori in a Box is designed for middle school students; however, we can provide extensions or modifications for older students.
Can students work on the Box by themselves, or will they need help from an adult?
Students can work on the Box 100% independently, although we recommend an adult facilitator to help guide them through the activities. We provide a written guidebook for facilitators that explains the science behind each lesson so you can better support your student(s).
How long will it take to complete the Box?
Each of the 8 activities takes approximately one hour.
What’s in the Box?
Salvadori in a Box contains eight hands-on experiments and activities. Through these lessons, students will learn about bridges and skyscrapers and the forces that keep them standing. All the necessary materials, including weights for testing structures, scissors, paper, tape and glue, are included, as well as instructions for students and adult facilitators and a book of crossword puzzles using vocabulary from the lessons.
